- Replica of the Cadaver Sculpture of the 7th Earl of Arundel’ is an output consisting of an artefact created by Rorie Brophy in 2019. Brophy was commissioned by Waterford Treasures to sculpt a life-size copy of the 15th-century cadaver statue of John Fitzalan, 7th Earl of Arundel, which is held in Arundel Castle, Sussex, in order to mark the historic connection between the Earls of Arundel and Waterford. The task was especially difficult because the original cadaver sculpture is one of the most detailed of the period. The other major challenge was the pressure of time. Given these twin pressures, Brophy could not use traditional sculpting techniques and yet deliver the brief on sched-ule, and so had to create another process. This began with the decision to use a body-cast, which involved taking a mould directly from someone with similar dimensions to the cadaver and then producing a plaster copy of that person. The complete process was arduous, involving the use of several different materials, some of which were improvisations on Brophy’s part to suit the working environment, as well as to meet the deadline - which was accomplished.
The submitted pdf file includes photos documenting the work as well as a description of the creative process.
