- This study combines geometry, philosophy, mysticism, literary criticism, Qur’anic exegesis and specialist artistic practice in order to decode the hermetic instructions of the ‘proportioned script’, a 9th century Arabic writing system which underlies the development of Islamic calligraphy. On that basis, the geometric foundations of the Arabic letter shapes and their tracing in two cardinal manuscripts are examined for the first time. The interdisciplinary approach, the complexity of the material, the range of variants in the sources and the application of the highest standards of mathematical accuracy in the production of some 200 large-scale illustrations, required a sustained multi-year effort.
