- English abstract
- This philological edition retrieves from a palm leaf manuscript 48 Tamil Lutheran hymns sung by the first Tamil Lutheran congregation in Tranquebar, Tamil Nadu. These hymns have synthesized theological, religious and cultural concepts of the German Lutheran Pietists and Tamil bhakti religions such as Shaivism and Vaishnavism. They demonstrate how the Tamil Lutherans celebrated their new theological insights in recurring festivals and rites of passage. This edition retains the original orthography, lexis and semantics of the manuscript and gives their modern equivalents in the footnote apparatus. Thus it contributes to contemporary studies on Tamil linguistics, grammar and music.
