- Sorcha O’Brien’s Powering the Nation originated in the author’s PhD research (2005-2011) followed by extensive further work for the book’s publication in 2017. Primary research included visits to the Ardnacrusha power plant and visits to archives and libraries including the ESB Archive in Dublin, Siemens Archiv in Munich, the National Library of Ireland, the National Archives of Ireland, the National Gallery of Ireland, the Irish Architectural Archive, Limerick City Museum, the Crawford Gallery in Cork, as well as private collections. The book’s development was supported by the 2014 Brooke Hindle Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Society for the History of Technology.
