- The methodology for this book has been ethnological—drawing on participant observation, interviews and archives over a three-year period. My informants were relatives of former islanders, curators, translators, editors, academics and artists. I conducted research journeys to and from Edinburgh to Dingle, Cork, Galway and Dublin. My research involved short trips as well as an extended stay at Harvard University. Interviews were conducted with people in Germany, France Denmark, and also in the US. Writing this book has meant accessing archives and sources and researching in several languages (Danish, French, Galician, German, Irish, Italian, Russian, Spanish and Swedish).
