- Using the uniquely rich phonetic data of Survey of Gaelic Dialects of Scotland (SGDS), this paper investigates the merger and partial merger of palatalised lateral phonemes in Scottish Gaelic dialects. Quantitative analysis reveals for the first time the statistically significant (and non-significant) phonological environments for two opposing developments, suggesting hyperdialectism as an explanation for one. Detailed analysis of archive material (written and sound recordings), including newly-discovered unpublished materials, reveals that transcription practices of fieldworkers and editors must be examined when analysing SGDS materials. The paper sets a model and standard for future study of the fine-grained phonetic materials of SGDS
