- Beam steerable antenna arrays are highly desirable for wireless devices, reducing electromagnetic radiation absorption, increasing channel capacity, and enhancing battery life but conventional steerable antennas use heavy/intricate phase-shifters necessitating complex circuitry. This paper demonstrates a novel phase-shifter-free phased array beam steerable antenna using a switched pattern reconfigurable square loop antenna developed earlier by us, see featured article: Electronics Letters (Vol.47(12)). The new array benefits from a wide scan angle (120o) and high gain as compared to its conventional counterpart as well as being lighter in weight. This novel antenna was deployed in an Intelligent City project and is widely-cited.
