- Double-weighted statement
- This book, even allowing for the material which appeared in a previous REF period, is considered appropriate for double-weighting because it represents the collection and analysis of a significant body of material, demonstrating a sustained research effort and resulting in a publication with considerable scale and substance.

- Additional information
- Some parts of Ch.1 appeared in 'Thresholds of Attention' in Thinking on Thresholds, ed. Mukherji (Anthem, 2011). Some parts of Ch.3 were first published in 'Tennyson, by Ear', in Tennyson among the Poets, ed. Douglas-Fairhurst and Perry (Oxford UP, 2009). The latter was submitted to REF 2014. In both chapters the material has been significantly revised and repurposed.
