- This book presents the first archive-based study of the emergence of human rights activism in Britain. At its core is a major new assessment of the history of Amnesty International, but many other less well-known organisations are also given scholarly treatment. The book is the product of seven years intensive research, and some twenty years of broader engagement with the subject. In exploring many different strands – political, religious and social – the book draws on a very wide range of archive sources, many consulted for the first time. Some collections were largely uncatalogued, others were held in private possession.
