- A 92,000-word monograph that spans a chronology of more than 175 years and which clearly demonstrates sustained research effort. Produced over a period of six years, the research at its heart involved the collection and analysis of a very large body of material that was both diverse and difficult to access. It presents a critical insight which was dependent upon lengthy interrogation of a diverse and thematically broad set of materials, from newspapers to animal husbandry diaries, and from archival film to guidebooks. Additionally, the project demanded the composition of an original oral history archive.
