- This 340-page book (110,000+ words, 150 illustrations) is the culmination of over eighteen years research into Chinas encounter with architecture and modernity before Communism. It charts new territory for Chinas architectural historiography, arguing for a plural, decentred and postcolonial approach to modernism. It is original for its geographically, temporally and architecturally inclusive methodology, weighting equally western treaty ports and Japanese imperialism in Manchuria; developments in the late-1800s and the 1930s; foreign and Chinese architects. Within six months of publication, the book sold out and was reprinted in paperback. An excerpt was shortlisted for the 2018 RIBA President's Award for Research.
