- A consistently observed phenomenon is that active regions (sunspots, plage etc.) suppress the acoustic power of oscillations. This paper is significant because recent observational data (courtesy of NASA/SDO and the HMI science team) combined with a mathematical model, developed by the authors, is used to explain the mechanisms behind observed power suppression within active regions. This work was produced in collaboration with the SP2RC and JILA research groups and is supported by STFC (UK) and NASA grants NNX09AB04G, NNX14AC05G, and NNX14AG05G. SDO is a NASA mission, and the HMI project is supported by NASA contract NAS5-02139.
