- This account is based on two years of fieldwork carried out across six countries. Research in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Hungary and in the United Kingdom. McGarry gained access to the two largest Roma ghettos in the world to interview and hear accounts of the mistreatment of the Roma peoples in contemporary European space. This fieldwork was both difficult in terms of gaining access to the camps and complicated in terms of the translation and interpretation of evidence.
