- English abstract
- This volume presents the first full assessment of the Goethe Gesellschaft in the Third Reich, and of its role in reimagining Goethe for ideological purposes. Drawing on archival research, it examines the differing opinions of Goethe among German nationalists, the impact of antisemitism on the Gesellschaft, the battle for control of the Gesellschaft after 1933, and the promotion of a nationalistic interpretation of Goethe for propaganda purposes. The volume also considers the stance of the Gesellschaft during the war, and points to its postwar failure adequately to come to terms with its own past.
