- This book is co-edited and introduced by Brown and Mieves and includes substantive chapters by both, published in 2017. It comprises an edited collection of sixteen chapters by selected practitioners and theorists .
Wonder has an established link to the history and philosophy of science. However, there is little acknowledgement of the relationship between the visual artistic practice and wonder. This book presents a new perspective on this overlooked connection, allowing a unique insight into the role of wonder in contemporary visual practice. Artists, curators and art theorists give accounts of their approach to wonder through the use of materials, objects and ways of exhibiting. These accounts not only raise issues of a particular relevance to the way in which we encounter our reality today, but also, the book asks to what extent artists utilize the function of wonder purposely in their work.
One of the key aspects of the book is to question to what extent wonder, as a strategy for breaching the dichotomy between science and art, as well as having the potential to question preconceived notions of representation and visibility, is an essential component in contemporary artistic practice.
