- This special issue of Contemporary Music Review arose from the author's invitation to guest edit. He devised the topic and assembled a group of authors, subsequently contributing his own article, editing the volume as a whole, and writing the Introduction, which sets out the rationale for and scope of the issue. Contemporary music has always been a significant research area at York, in both practice and musicology. A holistic approach to considering musical experience lies at the heart of the Department of Music’s ethos. As part of this, in recent years a number of Department researchers have worked, often collaboratively, on establishing new analytical approaches to new music. The author has been at the forefront of this, and the CMR special issue provided an opportunity to develop and disseminate the thread of this work focused on timescale in contemporary compositional practice. While discussing, reviewing, and editing their contributions all fell within the author's remit as Editor, the extent to which these processes were shared amongst everyone helped to shape this collection.
