- The paper presents a novel theory of enhanced torque production in switched-flux permanent magnet machines. The theory admits different stator/rotor pole combinations, winding configurations and stator lamination segment types for designing new forms of magnetically geared machines. Mathematical analysis of the magnetic gearing effects, which are based on a proposed simplified magnetomotive force-permeance model, were verified by finite-element analyses and experimental measurements on functioning prototypes. The research led to further funding from Valeo Powertrain Systems, France, (£375k, contact:Senior Researcher, Valeo Group) to research the application of the techniques to the design of motors for hybrid electric vehicles.
