- Bilton was invited by Edward Elgar to edit a handbook of research on creativity and management as part of their series of research handbooks. He brought in Stephen Cummings as co-editor. Bilton wrote the book proposal and signed off with the publisher, but the concept and structure were a joint effort. The editors decided to structure the handbook under four headings – innovation, entrepreneurship, leadership and organisation – based on their earlier co-authored work Creative Strategy: reconnecting business and innovation. For each heading they approached four contributors to reflect on and amplify these themes. Bilton took the lead on commissioning, editing or writing eight of these sixteen chapters. The editors co-authored the introduction chapter and short introductions to each of the four sections. For the conclusion, they included a third co-author, to reflect critically on the book’s themes and applications. Of the other chapters in the collection, Bilton wrote one chapter myself (‘Learning to fail: lessons from Happenstance’ ). He co-wrote one chapter (‘Promoting ensemble: creative leadership in practice at the Royal Shakespeare Company’). For this Bilton interviewed Vikki Heywood, then wrote up the chapter with additional input from Stephen Cummings and some editorial comments from Vikki.
