- With its emphasis on passion, imaginary, and corporeality, the recent ‘turn’ to affect illuminates blind spots of dominant liberal political theories. We argue that it still tends to focus too much on the figure of the human as actor, agent, author. We show, with aid from “New Materialist” theories, why that is problematic. We propose a Spinoza-inspired conceptualization of affect for analyzing the myriad co-constitutions of sociopolitical sensoria with nonhuman and more-than-human-others. We demonstrate its application with an analysis of what we call heterological
societies, in which nonhuman others are admitted as fully fledged members.
