- The Alhambra Cupola: From Granada to Berlin (2020) is a comprehensive biography of an elaborate medieval ceiling taken from Granada’s Alhambra Palace to Berlin in the nineteenth century. The 195-page book is based on extensive new primary source research, undertaken during research fellowships at the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin (two years), and the Warburg Institute (three years), and draws upon German museum archives and architectural analysis of surviving buildings in Granada. Challenging categories of periodization, and of ‘Islamic’ and ‘European’ art, it considers the cupola’s contested status in relation to current debates on the restitution of museum objects.
