- The collection was commissioned by Routledge and Winters was brought on board on the recommendation of Miguel Mera, one of the editors. Winters, Mera and Ronald Sadoff undertook lengthy editorial discussions at the Music and the Moving Image conference in New York in 2014, in which they reviewed the field they anticipated the volume would represent and advance. As a result of these discussions, to which Winters contributed an equal share, the aims of the volume were set in advance of approaching contributors: it was designed both to provide a snapshot of the discipline of screen-music studies as it existed in relation to the questions of narrative, and to provide new methodological and aesthetic insights. Specifically, the editors wanted chapters to address: global perspectives; questions of creative process that were important to the prior work of all three editors; and a variety of analytical and critical methodologies to help the discipline’s researchers to expand their approaches. The editors reviewed together the work of established scholars, emerging voices, and mid-career researchers in the field and commissioned over fifty scholars from the UK, the US, Canada, Ireland, Norway, the Netherlands, South Africa, and Australia to contribute. They also asked other eminent scholars in the field to act as peer reviewers. Editing was split evenly, with each editor responsible for reading closely and shaping a third of the volume and providing secondary advice on another third. Some of Winters’ editorial interventions were substantial and involved reshaping a chapter to fit the brief. In addition to editorial leadership and writing a chapter of his own, he contributed to the chapter ‘Roundtable: Current Perspectives on Music, Sound, and Narrative in Screen Media’ (convened by Kassabian) and c.40% of the introductory chapter. He also created the index and was responsible for the volume’s style sheet.
