- International industrial-academic collaboration (Oclaro, UK; University of Cambridge, UK; ADVA, Germany). First demonstration of control scheme for full-band tunable lasers enabling athermal operation over a wide temperature range without Peltier thermocoolers, thereby reducing the power consumption of the module by up to 80%, with corresponding relaxation on thermal design, and also reducing cost. Concept is important not only for the specific application mentioned in the paper, WDM-PON access systems, but also more widely in data communications, e.g. in data centres, where power considerations are paramount. Industrial contact: Dr Jörg-Peter Elbers, VP of Advanced Technology, ADVA Optical Networking, JElbers@advaoptical.com. 15 citations.
