- Researched over nearly two decades, with access to many previously unused private archives, many Scottish Diocesan, religious orders, and the papal archives, this monograph offers a major reappraisal of Scottish Catholic intellectual life and the contribution of the clergy and the laity to discussions on the issues of politics, piety and identity. In ten chapters, the work presents these discourses and trends in ritual as not simply manifestations of local idiosyncrasies or conditions but for the first time as part of the larger trends in European and Global Catholicism, especially in terms of Catholic Action, Personal Piety, and Aggiornamento [Renewal].
