- Using a very large anonymised dataset about UK population accessing BBC iPlayer, this paper demonstrated energy consequences of pre-recording only popular TV broadcasts (as many cable providers currently do) and developed techniques to speculatively pre-cache personalised lists of programmes for each user with potential to halve the energy and traffic footprint of Catch-up TV. This started a line of work that strongly influenced protocols and procedures in the IEEE 1903.1 (2017) standard and is referenced in 2 of 10 use cases (This paper is use case 6.2), resulting in a commendation from the IEEE for “significant contributions”.
