- There is a small amount of overlap between Cooper’s book Diagnosing the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (2014) and her paper, Cooper, R., 2015. ‘Why is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders so hard to revise? Path-dependence and “lock-in” in classification.’.
Both outputs concern the DSM, a classification of mental disorders. The paper discusses how the DSM has become ‘locked in’ and hard to revise. The book discusses a range of issues connected to revising the DSM – the problems posed by ‘lock in’ are mentioned but not a major theme. A few sentences material from the book are repeated in the paper. These few sentences are spread over a number of pages, which describe what the DSM is, how it is revised, the changes made to autism and related disorders, links between the DSM and other classifications (ICD and RDoC).
Specifically, the overlap consists of a few sentences on the following book pages:
Pages from the Introduction of the book pp. ix,x,xi – these pages explain what the DSM is and how it is used. Some material is repeated in the paper.
Pages from Ch 1 of the book, p.2,3 – material from these pages, on the Research Agenda for DSM, is repeated in the paper.
Pages from Ch 5 of the book, p40,41,42,45,46 – material discussing the changes to the criteria for autism and related conditions is repeated in the paper.
Pages from Ch 7 of the book, p. 57 and 58 – material discussing RDoC, the ICD and insurance gets repeated in the paper.
Pages from the book to be set aside are thus: ix,x,xi,2, 3, 40,41,42,45,46,57,58
