- Interior Design as a taught discipline traditionally relies upon architectural theory and this has resulted in a practice that values architectural remodelling, but places less value on the softer and often marginalised aspects of the decorated interior. Contextually this work aims to re-evaluate interior decoration through the cinematic and theatrical lens of mise-en-scène and counter the paucity of material currently relating to this subject. The aim of this study is to explore whether the application of mise-en-scène can lead to a new theoretical focus.
Research questions central to this investigation were:
What is interior design?
What is atmosphere?
What is mise-en-scène?
Could an interior mise-en-scène become a new decorative theory?
This led to an exploration of atmosphere as integral to the concept of the decorated interior that builds upon the writings of Barscaq (1976), Böhme (1993), and Gibbs (2002). By highlighting the link to film theory, scenography and the ‘staging’ of space, a new interdisciplinary focus was developed theoretically relating to an interior mise-en-scène.
The research methodology involved a critical exploration of key theories alongside a comparative analysis of relevant case studies in the establishment of an interior mise-en-scène. An alternative history of interior design was proffered to reinforce this fresh reading. This approach proposed a new theory for the decorative that aimed to counter the prevalent architectural reading by establishing a new means for both critically analysing, understanding, and designing this type of interior.
