- This substantial monograph (478 pages) charts the experiences of hundreds of thousands of Londoners who found themselves submerged in poverty or prosecuted for crime, and surveys their responses to illustrate the extent to which plebeian Londoners influenced the pace and direction of social policy. It draws upon an extensive new body of primary source evidence (240,000 manuscript records) in the London Lives database. It is the product of draws sustained research effort and data collection over many years.
