- Commissioned by the editors (two leading Medievalists) following a workshop supported by Fondo Nazionale Svizzero per la Ricerca Scientifica, Gavril’s essay explores the world-famous sixth-century church of Holy Wisdom (Hagia Sophia) in Constantinople (Istanbul), one of the most discussed monuments of all time. By bringing together a critical reading of contemporary texts with spatial analysis, in particular employing VGA (visible graph analysis), Gavril highlights the crucial role of light in the subjective evaluation of the interior’s spatial qualities and the perception of the building’s layout, thus contributing to the study of how light was manipulated in pre-modern architectural design.
