- Snijders has worked closely with composer Laurence Crane since 2002, both as a soloist and as pianist and artistic director of the Ives Ensemble. The collaboration included not only rehearsals and performances, but also many discussions on music, performance, style, interpretation, and all other subjects that inform an interpreter in getting as close as possible to a composer’s sound world. This CD release is the fruit of that collaboration, and brings together a set of pieces that have never been recorded or made publicly available. The release brings together a number of earlier works, all for three performers, written between 1986 and 1989, and three pieces that date from 2011 to 2016, two for solo piano and one for quintet. The piano piece Keith Miller Project (KMP) was written for Snijders in 2015-16. It is the culmination of countless hours of composer and performer discussing piano playing, Snijders’ interest in 19th-century performance practice and in particular its focus on chord-spreading (something this piece uses extensively) as well as composing and performing large-scale pieces in movements - which is a new element in Crane's compositional output, with the KMP and Piano Quintet being the first examples of this - and the relationship between a composer and a specific performer. An important research area was the performer’s influence on a composer’s decisions, and vice versa. In this respect the piece is a collaborative work, a composition that was written for Snijders’ specific pianistic characteristics within Crane’s distinctive style. The CD recording was released in December 2016, before the piece was given its first concert performance on 18 March 2017, and even during the recording session last minute alterations were made. As a follow-up to the release a 30-minute podcast of Crane and Snijders discussing the CD has been made available on Youtube.
