- This original research article is part of the outcome of a collaborative project that explored the history of the Central Association of German Citizens of Jewish Faith, or CV, for the years 1933-1938. Based on a thorough analysis of the CV’s voluminous, yet so-far hardly explored archives located in Moscow, it takes issue with mainstream historiography and advances our knowledge of the dilemma liberal Jews faced. In light of the ideological traditions, the CV’s response to National Socialism was coherent and, in particular after 1935, also courageous. Active collaboration with political Zionism became also more important than hitherto acknowledged.
