- This book is a long-form output (185,000 words in length) of extended scale and scope and is based on the analysis of a large body of complex and hard-to-decipher sixteenth-century French and Occitan manuscripts from ten cities and towns in France. This material comprises 8,728 pages of consistorial registers, 2,600 pages of baptismal and marriage registers, and copious additional material from the communal archives, notarial records, council and consulate deliberations and criminal registers, from archives in Paris, Montauban, Nîmes, and Montpellier. The research was completed over a 15-year period.
