- This book took 8 years of continual study from PhD to publication. No part of it was published as a paper elsewhere. Due to the scarcity of relevant secondary material, the book was almost entirely vested in archival or manuscript research between 14 repositories and the substantial use of contemporary printed primary sources, contemporary publications and printed ephemera, circa 100 sources. This is illustrated by the variety and diversity of material from receipts for payment to hymn books and musical scores to children’s socialist fairy stories rarely utilised in the study of labour politics. Secondary material constitutes circa 300 sources.
