- This book is the results of years of archaeological fieldwork in Egypt (2005-2012) and also 2.5 years of library research, writing up and editing. The author has participated in the survey and excavation of all key sites discussed. The author held a leading role within international teams of archaeologists at the White Monastery and Athribis and directed a survey project at the Red Monastery, Egypt. The author raised funding from the Danish Institute in Damascus to carry out the later work. The extensive library research included examining textual sources as well as comparanda from monastic sites from Egypt to Britain.
