- These nine volumes in Bärenreiter’s Urtext Brahms Edition (comprising the complete Sonatas for Violin and Piano, the Sonatas for Violoncello and Piano, the Sonatas for Viola and Piano, for Clarinet and Piano, and an explanatory volume, ‘Performance Practices in Johannes’ Brahms’ Chamber Music’) clearly represent a sustained body of research. In addition to the critical insight demonstrated in the creation of these texts, complex issues surrounding the performance of Brahms’ music are contextualised via editorial prefaces and performing practice commentaries with detailed reference to a plethora of primary sources (autograph manuscripts, diaries, letters, performance reviews, treatises and instrumental tutors).
