- The conceptual and research framework for this 365-page volume was developed and implemented by Göttsche and his two co-editors. They also commissioned contributions from 31 authors in seven countries (editorial share 33.3%). Their aim was to create the first comprehensive account of the state of the art in international research into Wilhelm Raabe, a leading proponent of nineteenth-century German Realism. Göttsche’s research oversight and direction shaped contributions that cover the full range of Raabe’s literary works (and artworks) and their socio-historical context, as well as filling gaps in previous knowledge and developing new research avenues from twenty-first century perspectives. In addition to providing the volume’s intellectual rationale, Göttsche co-authored the Introduction (33.3%) and Chapter 8 (share 33.3%). He single-authored Chapters 1, 3 , 16, 31, 62, 69 and 74. Göttsche’s chapters (and chapter shares) total 30,613 words. His co-authored Chapter 8 is the first in decades to provide a comprehensive overview of the history of international Raabe research while Chapter 62, building on his previous research, further elaborates the innovative postcolonial rereading of the author’s works. Göttsche’s single-authored Chapters 3 and 74 set out for the first time comprehensively Raabe’s position in the reconceptualized field of literary Realism in Germany and beyond, and his sceptical relationship to programmatic Realism. Chapter 69 pioneers research into the previously unchartered relationship of Raabe to Johann Wolfgang Goethe, one of Raabe’s central references in literary history. While Chapter 1 summarizes knowledge in the field, Chapters 16 and 31 include new research beyond Göttsche’s relevant previous publications along with a synthesis of cutting-edge knowledge.
