- Disposal of brine from desalination plants is a growing problem as seawater desalination is increasingly adopted in arid world regions. The paper is significant in introducing a novel solution: the brine is used to cool a greenhouse and to make salt. The solution was implemented for the first time in Somaliland, gaining two awards in 2018: (1) The Shell Springboard to Seawater Greenhouse Ltd (contact: Director); (2) the Green Gown Research with Impact Award (to Aston University, where Davies was then employed, https://www.greengownawards.org/2018-winnersxcfde).
