- Ground reaction forces (GRF) are critical to the investigation of joint biomechanics, but their measurement outwith specialist laboratories requires expensive and not widely available equipment. For the first time, the dynamic relationships have been established between accelerations recorded from a single wearable inertial measurement unit and the vertical GRFs, contrasting with complicated biomechanical model-based approaches for their traditional estimation. The importance of the work is that it enables low-cost and long-term monitoring of gait information for patients during their daily activities. This played a critical role in the NSFC of China award (Ref: 61876015, CNY620,000).
