- Creithiau: the title of the book translates as ‘Scars: The Influence of the Great War on Society and Culture in Wales’. There are eleven chapters and a substantial introduction (entitled ‘Rupture’) and conclusion (entitled ‘‘Victory’ / Disillusionment / Scars’), both of which were authored by Gethin Matthews. He was responsible for three other chapters. The first explored the involvement of Wales’ Nonconformist denominations in the war effort in the first two years; the second traced how the influential journal Cymru presented the war in 1917; and the third examined the testimony of former soldiers decades after the events.
