- Titration methodologies have been used for low cost routine monitoring of full scale anaerobic digestion (AD) plants i.e. for critical parameters – alkalinity/volatile fatty acids. The derived titration equations provide greater monitoring and improved digester management. Work drove further developments in AD intermediate monitoring techniques through projects such as WG-SMART CIRCLE (with 8 industrial partners)(£300k-grant, >£500k industrial contribution), ERDF BEACON(£600k) and 4 KESS-PhD-projects with Welshwater/Bryn Power/WWU (£200k) and led to full-scale AD plant biogas improvements of over 50%. Businesses such as Welshwater/Suez/Bryn Power/Fre-Energy have benefitted. Methodologies developed deliver cost reductions in AD and have input into the BEIS-Energy-Innovation-Assessment-Innovation-2019 (Biomass/Bioenergy).
