- This monograph places debates on cosmopolitanism in dialogue with approaches to film studies, proposing that while cinema trades in the production of cosmopolitan ideals, it also enables us to address encounters where the cosmopolitan promise of affiliation and belonging are restricted and challenged. The product of substantial research, the book is the first to explore debates on cosmopolitanism and its implications through the lens of East Asian cinemas from Hong Kong, China, Japan and Singapore, challenging definitive cultural cinemas bounded by national demarcations, and encouraging readers to take into account the affective encounters that cinema affords us in complex times.
