- This monograph offers the first historical study of one of the deadliest floods in human history. It is based on very extensive research conducted over the course of a decade, using Chinese and English archival material collected in China, the UK, and Singapore. It not only presents a significant amount original empirical material, but also makes a theoretical contribution to the field of disaster studies, ensuring that it appeals to scholars from a range of disciplines. It won the 2019 John K. Fairbanks prize from the American Historical Association for an outstanding book in East Asian History.
