- Double-weighted statement
- This book is the major output of a three-year project, with the bulk of the research undertaken during institutional study leave plus a full-time two-year Major Research Fellowship awarded by the Leverhulme Trust. The project entailed examination of historical, sociological, philosophical and political as well as legal sources dating back to the start of the 19th century. The work for chapter 7 required research into legal developments in Australia, enabled by a visiting research scholar appointment at the University of Melbourne with visits to Sydney and Canberra to interview policy-makers and lawyers as well as academics.
