- This book was the outcome of a 9-month AHRC Research Fellowship. It was awarded the 2019 Allan Lloyd Smith Memorial Prize (Monograph), awarded biennially by the International Gothic Association to a scholarly publication considered to have significantly advanced the field of Gothic Studies. The judges described it as ‘paradigm-shifting’, ‘an important intervention’ and ‘extraordinarily wide-ranging and ambitious’. It was widely and positively reviewed including in Gothic Studies and the TLS. Approximately 14,000 words out of 85,000 in total were published elsewhere in the previous REF period, although they were not entered for assessment.
