- In a Place Like This (IAPLT) is a multi-component output comprising an artist’s publication and online exposition in the SAR research catalogue: https://www.researchcatalogue.net/profile/show-exposition?exposition=32161 IAPLT examines the act of remembering as a thing in itself and contributes to the critical dynamics of a changing material relationship between the act of reading images and how they perform as objects in both physical and web-based platforms. It was disseminated at conferences and exhibits at Bergen, Zurich, Hong Kong and Arendalsuka between 2016 and 2019.
In it, Higgins and Sandborg address questions inherent in the act of producing and reading images, specifically, how photographic and painted image making and text, can be a catalyst for understanding and critical reflection in a series of 'adaptations'.
IAPLT offers visual artefacts as responsive critical ‘friction points’ that perform in an image saturated culture where images are produced and read as instantly, disposable and forgettable. It explores how the image can contest and directly communicate these moments of erasure, to contribute to an understanding of historical and personal narratives that directly refer to specific moments of displacement, belonging and place.
IAPLT’s methodology comprises artist publications – on-line, peer reviewed hard copy, large scale unique hand bound editions, exhibition/installation and teaching - as points of critically engaged dissemination and containers of conflict in themselves. These elements are interwoven in a collaborative co-production, a dialectic method, a place for the tension between conflicting ideas and investigation to be explored through discussion. In doing so it contributes to contemporary debates on image production and the construction of social narratives, situated in relation to artists and critical thinkers including E.G. Goddard, JL, Tillmans, J, Kiefer, A, Arendt, H and Didi-Hubermans who address concerns for the ethics of representation and the conflict inherent in the depiction of ourselves and other/s.
