- This book is the result of 10 years research into religious expressive culture among the Uyghur Turkic Muslims. It is the principal output arising from the Leverhulme Research Project (2014-18) Sounding Islam in China on which Harris was PI. It draws on ethnographic fieldwork in different sites across Xinjiang, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan between 2009 and 2016, and also draws on digital ethnography working with Uyghur-language social media sites. The book covers an interlinked set of themes, drawing on diverse theoretical frames, concerning sound, religious practice, territory and power, tracking the unfolding political crisis in Xinjiang.
