- Carolyn Shapiro's chapter on Bentham's “Auto-Icon” self-portrait contributes to the first anthology dedicated to Bentham's Utilitarian philosophy within the context of art. Specifically, this chapter situates Bentham's Auto-Icon and his philosophy in general within Performance Studies and Performance Philosophy, a unique approach to understanding Bentham’s corpus. Shapiro’s cross-reading of Bentham's Auto-Icon with two Bentham texts now published for the first time reveals Bentham’s radical perspectives on the intersections between queer sexuality, the body, and religion, perspectives which have heretofore not been recognised in the canon of Bentham studies.
