- Despite numerous efforts a direct comparison of DNS and LES for liquid jet atomisation in crossflow had never been achieved. This collaborative paper is significant because it presents for the first a comprehensive comparison of LES and DNS results for the primary atomisation of turbulent liquid jets injected into a subsonic gaseous crossflow. This work provides a wide range of length scales to predict drop size distribution, and identified that both DNS and LES followed a log-normal distribution based on their respective droplet diameter data. This research is a key outcome of an EPSRC Innovation Fellowship (EP/S001824/1).
