- Additional information
- The substantive output in this multi-component submission is the catalogue to a major international exhibition, 'American Impressionism: A New Vision 1880-1900' (28 March 2014 – 1 Feb 2015). Fowle was one of two main authors (with Katherine M. Bourguignon of the Terra Foundation) of the catalogue, authoring one of the three essays: ‘American Artists in Europe. Engaging with Impressionism’. The catalogue was published in English, French and Spanish. Fowle was co-curator of the exhibition, which travelled to three venues (the Musée des Impressionnismes, Giverny, the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh, and the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum, Madrid). She was lead curator for the Edinburgh exhibition. The project explored the origins of American Impressionism, issues of national identity and the market for and critical reception of French Impressionism in the USA. It introduced a group of artists little known outside the USA to an international audience, challenged existing ideas about global Impressionism and made a case for the merits of American art of this period. Please see the front matter of the book for details of the exhibition.
