- This 510-page book includes a scholarly translation of a seminal poetic work (9,758 lines, plus preliminary and postliminary prose texts) first published in the early seventeenth century, the majority of which has never previously been translated into English. The idiosyncratic poetic style, dense syntax and abundant historical and biblical allusions constitute an enormous translational challenge. Worth-Stylianou’s comprehensive footnotes and scholarly introduction (pp. 1-55) in themselves make a major contribution to existing scholarship. She brings Les Tragiques into the interdisciplinary compass of comparative literature, early modern European history, theological studies of the Reformations, while reflecting on and contributing to translation studies.
