- Double-weighted statement
- This monograph represents a comprehensive social and cultural history of the emergence of local modernity in Egypt. It is the product of a sustained research effort over half a decade. The sources used are not limited to a single corpus but include extensive research into many different types of sources. These include the cinema, novels and other books (essays, short stories), autobiographies, a vast number of popular magazines and print ephemera, and private papers (diaries, letters, photographs). All of these sources are in Arabic and have been gathered in difficult conditions from archives scattered across Egypt.
